Creative ways to preserve memories online

A memory worth keeping is worth keeping safely. Here are ways to do it, and a reminder that sharing and preserving are different jobs.
Start with safe copies
Keep two copies of important photos in different places, and one of them off-site or in the cloud. Name files with a date and a few words. Export from apps now and then so you are not relying on one service.
Pair the photo with the story
A photo without words loses meaning in a few years. Add who, where and why it mattered, in a caption, a text file or the file name.
Make something to share
- A shared family album that several people can add to.
- A short video or slideshow set to a favourite song.
- A printed photo book for the people who prefer paper.
- A voice note from someone you love, saved with its date.
- A small public mark, such as a block on a memory wall, with a few lines and a date.
Think before you make it public
- Ask everyone who appears in a photo, and be especially careful with children.
- Leave out addresses, phone numbers and anything that could identify where someone lives.
- Remember that public things can be copied, even if you remove them later.
Share is not the same as preserve
A public page is great for showing something to others. It is not your archive. Keep the originals somewhere you control.
